One of our main projects is growing food for ourselves and our visitors. We've got a small vegetable garden where we like to grow items to eat fresh or we'll can, freeze, dry, and sell or give away the excess. Our favorite things to make are jam, pesto, pizza, and quiche (with eggs from our hens).
In 2011, we planted a small orchard, which currently consists of ten varieties of apple, two types of nectarine, a peach tree with five varieties grafted onto it, and an Asian pear tree with three varieties grafted onto it. To accompany our strawberries and blueberries, this spring we planted a living fence filled with blackberries, raspberries, black raspberries, tayberries, and boysenberries. We also collect food from our Forest.
To round out our food production, Nathan captured a swarm of bees from a neighbor's bush to help pollinate all our plants (and maybe give us a bit of honey) and this fall will be installing a 26' x 48' high tunnel, where we are going to make an attempt at growing actual bananas - cross your fingers for us!
